Kyle Hammond, MD Team Physician
Dr. Kyle Hammond spent his childhood in Johns Creek, GA and graduated from Chattahoochee High School before attending the University of Georgia. Dr. Hammond graduated with honors in Microbiology from UGA, and then attended the Medical College of Georgia and graduated with honors, obtaining his medical degree. Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Hammond completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Internship and Residency at Emory University. While in his training, Dr. Hammond received the "Outstanding Resident Award", and was twice the 1st runner-up in the Kelly Society’s Annual Research Award. In 2011 and 2012, Dr. Hammond’s research on the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL Surgery) won the 1st place Award for Research at the Annual Southern Orthopaedic Association and Georgia Orthopaedic Association meetings. He also worked as a Resident Team Physician for Georgia Tech, Emory, and Oglethorpe University Athletics.
After the completion of his Orthopaedic Surgical Training, Dr. Hammond was selected to the ‘world-renowned’ Sports Medicine, Shoulder Surgery, and Concussion Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While in Pittsburgh, Dr. Hammond was the Associate Head Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for both the Duquesne University Football team and the University of Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball team. He also worked as a Team Physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the University of Pittsburgh athletics, Robert Morris College athletics, as well as the Pittsburgh Ballet. At the completion of his time in Pittsburgh, Dr. Hammond moved on to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, New York to work alongside the renowned, Dr. Brian Kelly and learn his techniques in the field of hip arthroscopy.
Dr. Hammond will be seeing patients at Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center, as well as Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Dr. Hammond has a special interest in the overhead/throwing athlete, ligament injuries to the knee, Tommy John surgery, joint preservation surgery, and is one of the few fellowship trained hip arthroscopists and concussion specialists in Georgia.
Dr. Hammond and his family are excited to have returned home. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Angie and their twin boys, Chase and Knox. When he’s not busy with family and work, Dr. Hammond enjoys working-out, golf, tennis, baseball and football.
Karen Cantrell, MS, ATC Head Athletic Trainer
Karen grew up in Pound, VA where she attended and graduated from Pound High School. She then went to University of Virginia’s College at Wise where she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology with a concentration in Sports Medicine in 2000. During her time at UVAW, Karen worked with all athletics teams including Football, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball, and Cross Country. Karen moved to Atlanta to attend Life University in Marietta, Ga to pursue her masters in Sports Injury Management as well took doctor of chiropractic classes. Karen has worked as a Certified Athletic Trainer in such settings as physical therapy, movies, high school sports, collegiate sports as well as Professional sports. Karen first worked at Northview High School in 2005 and returned in 2015 as the Head Athletic Trainer.
Charles Kistler, ATC
Charles is a native of Cumming, GA. He earned his masters in Sports Medicine from Georgia State University in May of 2015. As a graduate assistant with the Panthers, he worked with GSU Football and the men's and women's tennis teams. He also worked with the baseball team. Charles also brings NFL experience to Emory Sports Medicine.
